Company ranked first among companies with revenues from $1 billion to $5 billion
SAN DIEGO, California – June 3, 2011 - Aviation Week & Space Technology, the leading aerospace and defense weekly, has ranked Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) the No. 1 aerospace and defense company reporting revenues between $1 billion and $5 billion in 2010. The magazine will honor Cubic and the other category winners on June 22 at the Paris Air Show.
Aviation Week has been rating aerospace and defense firms since 1996. Fifty-five companies were considered for this year’s rankings, including 30 in Cubic’s category.
The rankings are based on proprietary metrics developed by Aviation Week and A&D analysts that compare companies’ performance in their peer group. Metrics embedded in four performance categories, including Return on Invested Capital (ROIC), Earnings Momentum, Asset Management and Financial Health, were the criteria used to determine the leading companies.
Commented Michael K. Lowry, Project Manager, Top Performing Companies, for Aviation Week: “Cubic Corp.’s operating performance was superb in 2010, achieving its highest Top-Performing Companies score ever and besting a formidable group of peers to take the No. 1 ranking. The numbers suggest this result is not an accident. The company has posted an enviable history of higher highs and higher lows for the past 10 years. Nor does management appear content to rest on their laurels. Through the first quarter of 2011, earnings momentum continues to accelerate, reaching a level not seen since the aerospace and defense industry’s high-water mark set in 2007. Looking ahead, Cubic’s operating performance will be tough to beat in next year’s ranking!”
Cubic reported revenues of over $1 billion for the first time in FY 2009 -- the same year that Cubic celebrated 50 years as a publicly traded company. Cubic was launched in 1951 by Walter J. Zable, the company’s founder, chairman, president and CEO. Revenues grew more than 17 percent in FY10, reaching almost $1.2 billion. Since 2006, the company’s market capitalization has increased more than 250 percent to $1.3 billion today.
“We are honored to receive this award from such a prestigious authority in the defense and aerospace business,” stated Walter J. Zable. “Cubic is financially strong, enjoys a leading position in our core markets, and continues to invest in innovative technologies to provide superior products for our customers.”
Since its inception, Cubic has played a prominent role in the aerospace and defense industry. In its early days, the company developed and pioneered a wide range of important tracking technologies, including systems to track missiles and the early manned space missions. Later, Cubic branched into developing systems that track the position and performance of fighter pilots during air combat training exercises, and creating communications systems and networks for transmitting video and sensor data anywhere on earth. Today, Cubic is a market leader in air and ground combat live training instrumentation, mission support services, and automated fare collection systems and services for public transit. Recent acquisitions have strengthened the corporation’s cybersecurity and intelligence portfolio, and have expanded its reach to include global asset tracking for the defense logistics and commercial transportation markets.
